Preparation for the transition process happens in school. Students with autism have the right to receive comprehensive transition services. Under IDEA, school districts are responsible for providing the supports they need to meet their goals for after high school to the best of their abilities.
In the coming years, an unprecedented number of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) will leave high school and flood the U.S. adult disability system, where services are based on the availability of funding and waiting lists abound.
Many parents state that, even by college age, their autistic child may still struggle with self-advocacy, telling others what he/she needs, independence, managing emotions, and personal adaptive skills. Doing more during the high school period to help with these deficiencies may help improve the transition process.
