The Gato class of submarines was built for the United States Navy and launched in 1941–1943; they were the first mass-production U.S. submarine class of World War II. Together with their near-sisters the Balao and Tench classes, their design formed the majority of the United States Navy’s World War II submarine fleet.
The Gato s, along with nearly all of the U.S. Navy fleet-type submarines of World War II, were of partial double-hull construction. The inner pressure-resisting hull was wrapped by an outer, hydrodynamic hull. The voids between the two hulls provided space for fuel and ballast tanks.
The first boat laid down was actually USS Drum at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on 11 September 1940. She was commissioned on 1 November 1941, and was the only Gato -class boat in commission when the war started. Gato herself was laid down on 5 October 1940 by the Electric Boat Company at Groton, Connecticut, and commissioned 31 December 1941.
The 56 remaining Gato -class submarines, designed to fight an enemy that no longer existed, were largely obsolete, despite the fact they were only two to four years old.

On page 20 is a cutaway of USS Balao, marked as Oct.’44. … Using a separate cylinder for the conning station simplified the design of the structure of the main pressure hull. It also increased the periscope depth by the additional height above the keel.
The basic Gato design was sound enough that the next class, the Balaos, were little more than Gatos constructed with thicker hull plates. In fact, the existence of the Balao class was successfully kept secret by the Navy throughout the war, and even the submarine force spoke of “thin-skinned” and “thick-skinned” Gatos .

Its conning tower incorporating the lessons learned from the earlier war years, and its pressure hull made from high tensil steel, giving it a much greater diving depth. Both subs will eventually have two AA platforms as the gato goes through its wartime modifications.
