The training is structured as:One broadcast class, introduction to class cohort, and 4 hour training.16 hours of online instruction—self-paced completed within a 3 week period.20 hours of in-person training held 3 weeks after initial broadcast class.
Working as a certified peer specialist involves these common responsibilities:Act as a role model for clients to prove recovery is possibleDiscuss shared lived experiences to make clients comfortableIdentify client needs and develop a recovery plan for those needsTeach and encourage clients to practice self-advocacyConnect clients with community support and resources
Hold a high school diploma or have their GED and pass the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC-RC) exam;Complete 46 hours of required training (advocacy, mentoring and education, recovery and wellness, and ethical responsibility);Complete at least 500 hours of related volunteer or work experience; and
Peer recovery support services are typically provided by paid staff or volunteers familiar with how their communities can support people seeking to live free of alcohol and drugs and are often peers of those seeking recovery. Some of these services may require reimbursement while others may be available in the community free of charge.
